Henri-Albert Gosse
A sparkling pharmacist! Practicing in turn botany, chemistry, physiology, natural history, geology and even the occult sciences, Henri-Albert Gosse was above all the founder of the SPHN (the Society of Physics and Natural History of Geneva). Originally named "Society of Natural History", it gathered together the most famous of Geneva’s scientists as well renowned visiting physicists (Volta, Rumford, Biot, Arago, Ampère), chemists (Berthollet, Davy) and naturalists of repute (Cuvier, von Buch). Gosse was also to found the "Swiss Academy of Natural Science" in 1815. And Geneva? After having opened a pharmacy at Place Longemalle, Gosse launched himself in the production of artificial mineral water, associated with Johann Jacob Schweppes, a jeweler set up in Geneva. The Genevan firm soon produced fizzy water and opened branch offices in Paris and Bristol. The latter was to become "Cadbury and Schweppes Ltd", which still produces the famous sparkling beverage.
