Thomas Woodrow Wilson
"We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers." Democratic candidate for the American presidential election, he won the race in November 1912. Son of a Presbyterian pastor, he always sought to apply moral principles during his mandate and strongly believed in the role of the United States in guaranteeing order and democracy. At first in favor of neutrality during World War I, he finally declared war on the German Empire on April 6, 1917. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919, one year after having made "The Fourteen Points" declaration at the time of the Treaty of Versailles, a statement that would to lead to the founding of the League of Nations. And Geneva? The Secretariat of the League of Nations was housed in the former "Hôtel National" until 1938. This magnificent building, designed by the architect Jacques Elisée Goss, was completed in 1875. Ideally located, facing the lake, this luxurious hotel with its 225 guest rooms and rooms, would welcome the world’s most famous personalities. Today, in keeping with its international vocation, the Palais Wilson is the home of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. To see: • Palais Wilson, rue des Pâquis 52
