Charles Pictet-de-Rochemont
"What will certainly remain is the opinion of Geneva as a true power." During the Congress of Vienna in 1814 where the great powers met in order to redraw the map of Europe following the Napoleonic wars, this talented diplomat cleverly pushed the European nations to accept and guarantee Switzerland’s permanent neutrality. He was also co-founder of the eminent magazine named "Bibliothèque Britannique". And Geneva? At the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, Geneva had only one desire: to join the Swiss Confederation. This wish was to become reality thanks to the efforts of Pictet-de-Rochemont. Indeed, it was he who rallied the French and Sardinian towns needed to form the Canton of Geneva and its roadway connections with the Confederate territory. To see: • He is buried in the Plainpalais Cemetery (tomb No. 703), rue des Rois.
