Alexandre Calame
The great Swiss painter of mountains. This highly talented painter and engraver was François Diday’s student before becoming his rival. Influenced by the romantic movement, Alexandre Calame rapidly became impassioned by the picturesque alpine landscapes. He was particularly apt in depicting the beauty of the lofty summits, the charms of the Léman and the valleys of Savoy. His international renown is largely due to his famous painting "Storm at the Handeck" (1839). And Geneva? His works are exhibited at Geneva’s Art and History Museum: "View of the Mont-Blanc seen from the Geneva region", "Spring", "Summer", "Autumn", "Winter", "The Valley of Zermatt", "Storm at the Handeck". To see: • He is buried in the Plainpalais Cemetery (tomb No. 603), rue des Rois.
